There exist certain diseases and conditions that may be linked to oral health. Below we suggest some oral health tips for you to get the basic understanding of what these diseases and conditions are.

Oral Health Tip # 1: Cardiovascular Disease

The following types of cardiovascular diseases may be linked to oral health: heart disease, stroke, and bacterial endocarditis. Some studies suggest that bacteria from gum disease enter bloodstream and travel through arteries to heart, affecting cardiovascular system. Though periodontal disease is reported to be associated with heart disease, more research is needed to confirm this assumption.

Oral Health Tip # 2: Pregnancy and Birth

Gum disease can lead to premature birth. Some researchers claim that disease-causing organisms in the mouth of a pregnant woman can wind up in the placenta or amniotic fluid, which causes premature birth. Maintaining excellent oral health before getting pregnant is of extreme importance as treating periodontal disease during pregnancy may turn to be too late. The thing is that the infection has already spread in the woman’s body.

Oral Health Tip # 3: Diabetes

Diabetes increases the risk of a number of oral infections, such as gum disease, cavities, tooth lost, dry mouth, etc. Maintaining excellent oral health is important as poor oral health makes diabetes more difficult to control. Different infections increase the level of blood sugar and require more insulin to control it.

Oral Health Tip # 4: HIV/AIDS

Sometimes the first signs of AIDS may appear with severe gum infection. Persistent white spots or unusual lesions on tongue or in mouth may also serve the first sign of AIDS.

Oral Health Tip # 5: Osteoporosis

Teeth may inform you about the first signs of bone loss. The latter may be identified through routine dental X-rays.

Oral Health Tip # 6: Other Conditions

There exist many other conditions, the presence of which in your mouth informs you about severe disorders. These might be certain cancers, syphilis, substance abuse, gonorrhea and eating disorders.
